2018 Kentucky Derby Power Rankings

2018 Kentucky Derby Power Rankings

The 2018 Kentucky Derby is less than a week away. Currently, there are 20 runners in line to compete in the fastest two minutes in sports. If you haven’t heard of more than a handful of those thoroughbreds that’s ok. I used the weekend and a case of Red Bull to study up on the 2018 Kentucky Derby hopefuls and have the compiled the definitive 2018 Kentucky Derby power rankings!

Post Time: 6:34 PM ET
TV Coverage: 2:30-7:20 PM ET
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live

  1. Mendelssohn +450 – His UAE Derby victory was awe-inspiring. He’s also a half-brother to mare champion Beholder. This guy’s the real deal.
  2. Justify +330 – The Santa Anita Derby win was great. If he repeats it, he should finish in the Top 3. He’ll have to better than the SA Derby to beat a monster like Mendelssohn.
  3. Bolt d’Oro +700 – I like how he kept trying in the SA Derby even though he wasn’t going to catch Justify. Justify got an easy lead in that race. He won’t on Saturday. That gives Bolt d’Oro a shot.
  4. Audible +625 – The fact he can run pretty much any way he must to win a race means he should be right there in the Top 4 on May 5.
  5. Vino Rosso +1400 – Jockey John Velasquez chose to ride Vino Rosso over Todd Pletcher’s other Kentucky Derby contenders. That’s all you must know about his chances.
  6. Magnum Moon +600 – Sure, he was green in the Arkansas Derby stretch. He still easily won. Pletcher’s had 3 weeks to get him to learn how to run straight.
  7. My Boy Jack +1500 – Of the true closers, he’s probably the best. He looked good winning the Lexington Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. He could be a force if the pace melts down.
  8. Hofburg +2000 – Here’s another closer with a ton of potential. I think he’ll have a shot, like My Boy Jack, if the pace melts down.
  9. Good Magic +900 – Trainer Chad Brown hopes to have Good Magic peak on Saturday. Even if Good Magic peaks, he still might not finish in the Top 8.
  10. Noble Indy +2500 – He must improve to get into the Top 10. I believe he does. But, like Good Magic, the Top 8 are just better horses, I think.
  11. Flameaway +3000 – No horse runs with as much heart as Flameaway does. Heart will take you so far in the Kentucky Derby.
  12. Enticed +2300 – I believe he ran about as well as he could in the Wood Memorial. Without improving, he’ll have no shot on Saturday.
  13. Instilled Regard +2000 – He flattened after running well earlier this year. This seems too tough.
  14. Solomini +2200 – Usually, everything Baffert runs is live. Solomini doesn’t appear to be live on May 5, though. He’s an okay horse. These are good to great horses.
  15. Combatant +6000 – Steve Asmussen gets a runner in the Run for the Roses. That’s about all I can write about Combatant.
  16. Free Drop Billy +3500 – 35 to 1 are underlay odds on Free Drop Billy.
  17. Lone Sailor +4500 – He doesn’t have much chance of catching Justify, Mendelssohn, Bolt d’Oro, etc.
  18. Firenze Fire +5500 – He’s just not fast enough.
  19. Promises Fulfilled +5000 – Either runs with Mendelssohn and Justify early and loses by 50 lengths. Or, he doesn’t run with those two and loses by 25 lengths.
  20. Bravazo +5000 – Got lucky to win the Risen Star Stakes. That’s why he’s in the field. I don’t see any situation where Bravazo finishes in the Top 4.

The 5Dimes Odds-on Favorite To Win The Kentucky Derby: Justify +370 / Mendelssohn +475

No horse has won the Kentucky Derby after not racing at 2 since Apollo did it in 1882. That’s a long time. However, the last horse to come around with as much fanfare as Justify’s gotten was American Pharoah in 2015. American Pharoah won the Triple Crown. Like Justify, Bob Baffert trained him.

Justify easily beat rival Bolt d’Oro in the Santa Anita Derby. He could just be one of those great racehorses that love to run. If Justify is one of those great racehorses, no history will stop him from winning the Derby on May 5.

Even though all of that’s true, Justify is a play against.  Why? It’s impossible to take such low odds on a horse to win the Kentucky Derby. There will be full field gunning for Justify in the 2018 Derby. It’s important to look for more value.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said that he won’t ship Mendelssohn to Churchill Downs until one or two days before the race. O’Brien does that with all of his horses. He wants his equines to keep their mind on racing. The best way to do that, O’Brien believes, is to keep them from getting too comfortable with their surroundings.

It’s a different way of thinking about it. During his illustrious career, it’s worked for Aidan O’Brien. He’s won every major stakes race in the world save for those run in the United States. Will it work on May 5? It could. Mendelssohn is definitely good enough to win the Kentucky Derby.

I don’t believe he’s +475 good enough. Mendelssohn’s odds are just too low for me to even consider betting on. Look elsewhere.

The 2018 Kentucky Derby Smart Pick: Audible +670

He’s sort of the forgotten horse. The reason is because it will have been 5 weeks between his win in the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby. Based on his Florida Derby win, Audible should be favored to take home the Run for the Roses.

Yes, he was that impressive. Audible is an incredibly versatile horse. He ran close to the lead when he won the Holy Bull Stakes. He ran well off the pace and won going away in the Florida Derby. Jockey John Velasquez could ride Vino Rosso in the Derby. I believe he sticks with Audible.

If he does, the same connections that won the 2017 Kentucky Derby with Always Dreaming could make it back to back with Audible. Johnny V. will have the luxury of deciding to run near the pace, or to run right off.

The Into Mischief sired colt is the smart 2018 Kentucky Derby pick.

The2018 Kentucky Derby Long Shot Pick:  Gronkowski +4000

Gronkowski is named after New England Patriots’ tight-end Rob Gronkowski. Now the famed NFL TE is a part owner of the thoroughbred. So if you want to bet on Gronkowski, now is the time befor Boston fanboys start driving the odds down.

He (the horse) received an invitation to the 2018 Kentucky Derby after winning the Burradon Stakes, a mile event, at Newcastle. Gronkowski’s odds imply he has no shot at winning the Derby on May 5.

I beg to differ. The reason Gronkowski has a shot of winning on May 5 has nothing to do with his name. His trainer, Jeremy Noseda, is one of the top thoroughbred trainers in the world. He knows what he’s doing.

Gronkowski has won 4 straight races on synthetic. But, his broodmare was sired by Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky. Gronk’s sire is Lohnro, one of the greatest racehorses to ever run in Australia.

The equine Gronk has what it takes to upset the favorites on Derby Day.

The Favorite To Win The 2018 NBA Title: Warriors +136/Rockets +229

The greatest super team since the original Dream Team are the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors who are listed at +135 to repeat as champs. The Dubs have limped into the playoffs, having lost 10 of their last 17 games without their leader, Steph Curry. He will be sidelined for the first round with an MCL injury.

Golden State was 40-10 with Curry in the lineup and an underwhelming 17-14 when he was in street clothes. Luckily for the Warriors, they face the Spurs who are without their own star, Kawhi Leonard.

The best team not the Golden State Warriors are the Houston Rockets who are listed at +229 to win the 2018 NBA title. Before the season began there was talk on whether James Harden and Chris Paul could play together? The Rockets answered by blowing away franchise records, finishing the regular season with the best record in the NBA and Harden’s first MVP nod.

The Celtics should be in the conversation of one of the favorites to win the NBA title after off-season acquisitions of Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving. Season-ending injuries to both have knocked Boston out of the title conversation.

The Smart Pick To Win The 2018 NBA Title: Cavs +650

This could be Lebron James final season in Cleveland. He will want to leave as a winner. But his supporting cast, outside of Kevin Love, is a tad green behind the ears.

The trio of Rodney Hood, Larry Nance Jr., and Jordan Clarkson has a grand total of 11 playoff games between them. All of them by Hood in 2017 when he was with Utah. The Duke-product averaged an underwhelming 8.9 points on 35.2 percent shooting.

LeBron-led teams (Miami and Cleveland) have made it to seven straight NBA finals, winning three titles. Can the Cleveland Cavs make it four titles in eight finals trips for LeBron?

The Smarter Pick To Win The 2018 NBA Title: Raptors +800

Is this the season the Toronto Raptors make it to the NBA finals? Up to this point, the daunting task of beating LeBron James four times in seven games has been an insurmountable task. Two things are different this time around.

First, the Cavs only star power outside of James is Kevin Love. Kyrie is gone. Isaiah Thomas never panned out and was shipped off to La-la Land. Second, the Raptors have the deepest bench in the league.

When the star duo of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan is off the court this season, the Raptors are still tied for the eighth-most points per chance on offense. Last year the Raptors averaged the fewest points per chance league-wide.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2018 NBA Title: Thunder +4000

Oklahoma loaded up with Carmelo Anthony and Paul George in the offseason too keep pace with the Warriors and Rockets and finished fourth in the West. While the addition of Anthony and George hasn’t translated to dominant wins on the court, the team is led by Russell Westbrook. He is the Thunder’s leader and has established that, like last season, the team still goes as he does.

5Dimes NFL Draft Prop Odds & Analysis

Who will be 2018’s first draft pick? Who will be the first QB chosen? First running back?

5Dimes NFL Draft Prop Odds & Analysis

The three day 2018 NFL Draft extravaganza kicks-off on Thursday, April 26, 8 p.m. ET with Round 1 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. culminating with Round 7 on Saturday, April 28th.

Who Will Be Drafted First Overall In 2018?

Sam Darnold, QB, USC -260

5Dimes oddsmakers and the majority of analysts believe that Darnold is the best QB in a very deep QB draft class. He does need some polishing, but there isn’t much that he can’t do on the field.

The biggest knock on the oddsmaker’s favorite to go tops in the 2018 NFL draft is an abundance of turnovers. But plenty of elite QBs turn over the ball. Think Andrew Luck and Matt Ryan.

Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming +200

Allen has a prototypical QB frame (6-foot-5, 237 pounds) and a cannon for an arm. That just doesn’t come around often. He’s also mobile for his size.

He has improved his draft day stock immensely in the pre-draft process. He has impressed scouts, GM and analysts alike. He is mentally ready to be a top draft pick and franchise QB. That’s a lot for a kid that grew up on a cantaloupe farm, spent two years at Reedley College in California and was a two-year starter at Wyoming.

Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State +750

Barkley is the only player that will make the team that drafts him instantly better. He is projected a top-five pick and if that holds true he’ll be the 11th running back to go that early since 2000.

The former Nittany Lion averaged 16.7 rushes per game during his 2017 season at Penn State with 4.2 receptions and 1.2 kickoff returns. Barkley can transform a team like Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott have over the past few seasons.

Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA +1500

Any other season, Rosen would be the clear-cut top pick to be drafted first overall. He is a prototypical pocket passer and comes from a pro-style system at UCLA. He’s been compared to Aaron Rodgers.

Rosen’s biggest knock on the field is his mobility outside of the pocket. His off the field critics label him as cocky and jerkish. An overly opinionated rich kid who’s too smart and has too many outside interests for his own good. Sounds like a franchise QB to me.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma +3000

Mayfield is the most experienced QB expected to go in the first round. He is also the most accurate on tape. He is a born leader and has a passion for the game that is infectious.

He is smaller than his contemporaries at 6-foot, 215 pounds. No QB other than Jared Goff has succeeded at a high level in the NFL coming from a spread offense like Mayfield played in at Oklahoma.

Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State +3000

Chubb is the best pass rusher of 2018. He has a prototypical build, plays a lot of snaps, has some experience in coverage and many have compared him to Terrell Suggs. There is no reason why he won’t be the top defensive player picked in the 2018 NFL draft.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama +10000

The team that drafts Fitzpatrick can play him at corner or safety right out of the gate. He is an active run stopper who has an NFL build, closes well and plays with an edge. He’s at his best lining up over the slot and playing close to the line of scrimmage.

Expect Fitzpatrick to be a top-10 pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
