2018 Preakness Odds & Expert Picks

2018 Preakness Odds & Picks

The 143rd Preakness Stakes’ eight-horse field (down from the 20-horse field at Churchill Downs a few weeks ago) is set! At the top of the fixed odds horse racing betting board is Kentucky Derby champ Justify. Also running in the Preakness after the Derby are Good Magic, Bravazo and Lone Sailor. Fresh faces at Pimlico include Quip, Sporting Chance, Diamond King and Tenfold.

At nine-and-a-half furlongs, it’s the shortest of the three Triple Crown legs. 5Dimes’ oddsmakers have updated the 2018 Preakness Stakes odds after yesterday’s draw.

Odds & Picks To Win The Preakness Stakes

  1. Quip +2000
  2. Lone Sailor +3000
  3. Sporting Chance +4000
  4. Diamond King +3000
  5. Good Magic +350
  6. Tenfold +4000
  7. Justify -230
  8. Bravazo +2800

The Favorite: Justify -230

Justify drew the seventh post position for the Preakness. The Derby winner remains the heavy horse betting favorite to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. He gives trainer Bob Baffert a shot as his seventh Preakness title. If Justify wins at Pimlico Baffert has a shot at a second Triple Crown in four years. American Pharoah accomplished the feat in 2015. Baffert is also 4-0 in the Preakness with a Derby winner running.

The Smart Pick: Quip +2000

Quip shares owners with Justify. That should be enough to deserve a few bucks to be bet on him by race day! Why would an owner add a horse to challenge a possible Triple Crown winner? Do they think Quip is better equipped to handle the shorter distance? Quip turned in his final timed work for the 143rd Preakness on Sunday morning, breezing a half-mile in 48.20 seconds at Keeneland.

The Tampa Bay Derby winner and Arkansas Derby runner-up did draw into the first post position. The colt needs to avoid being rubbed out early by throttling his tactical speed out of the gate. A clean break is the only shot Quip has to stay ahead of the field and avoid the dreaded rail.

The Long Shot: Diamond King +3000

Diamond King is a long shot at the 2018 Preakness. After drawing fourth yesterday, Pimlico opened Diamond King at 30/1 to win the Preakness. He has four wins in six career starts, including the Federico Tesio at Laurel Park.

Trainer John Servis won the Preakness in 2004 with Smarty Jones. Jockey Javier Castellano won his second Preakness last year aboard Cloud Computing. Diamond King has to tools for an upset!

2018 Preakness Stakes

2018 Preakness Stakes

After winning a sloppy tracked Kentucky Derby easily from the No. 7 post, Justify (pictured) will attempt to rekindle his winning ways by staying in that spot for the Preakness. And he is the big favorite to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

With a field of 20 thoroughbreds in Louisville, the Preakness will feature only eight runners. Check out the Preakness Stakes draw positions below. Betting odds included.

2018 Preakness Stakes Power Rankings

The 2018 Preakness Stakes is here and so are my race Power Rankings. Post time for the Preakness Stakes 2018 is approximately 6:20 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Preakness betting odds point towards a two-horse race between Derby winner Justify and Derby runner-up Good Magic. Both are clear-cut favorites a top the 5Dimes’ fixed odds horse betting board.

Derby winner Justify is the early -225 favorite to take the second leg of the Triple Crown. Good Magic is listed at +350 to win the Preakness Stakes. But the question remains. Is there a pony in the eight-horse field that can stop Justify’s dominance? My 2018 Preakness Stakes Power Rankings hope to answer those questions and more!

Odds To Win & Lose the 2018 Preakness Stakes

(win, lose)

  • Justify (-225, +175)
  • Good Magic (+350, -530)
  • Quip (+1600, -4800)
  • Diamond King (+2000, -6000)
  • Bravazo, Sporting Chance, Tenfold, Lone Sailor (+2500, -7500)

2018 Preakness Stakes Power Rankings

  1. Justify (-225, +175) – Justify aka the Curse Breaker is heading to Pimlico the Wednesday before the race. His last two races have been incredible and he’s deserving of his favorite status. There is no horse that will top anyone’s 2018 Preakness Stakes power rankings. This horse is a freak!
  2. Quip (+1600, -4800) – Quip didn’t race in the Derby but has the speed to be a serious Preakness Stakes contender. He is a surprising entry since he shares owners with Justify. I am predicting Quip to be in the early lead and the horse to catch in this race. Quip is the best horse to beat Justify on the shorter Pimlico track that favors speed over stamina. This horse is legit.
  3. Good Magic (+350, -530) – Good Magic finished second in the Derby. Finishing high in the Preakness will skyrocket his stud fees. An upset will set up a rubber match at the Belmont.
  4. Sporting Chance (+2500, -7500) – He looked great as a two-year-old and has tactical speed. Think nitrous in the Fast & Furious franchise. If he stays close in the final stretch without burning his speed, look out!
  5. Lone Sailor (+2500, -7500) – Lone Sailor closed well in the Kentucky Derby and ran a solid race in the Louisiana Derby. This is a must bet horse if you are looking for a long shot!
  6. Bravazo (+2500, -7500) – Bravazo was the sixth-place finisher at the Derby He disappointed at eighth in the Louisiana Derby and hasn’t hit the board since February. He has just three wins in nine career starts. Do you need another reason NOT to bet on this horse?
  7. Tenfold (+2500, -7500) – Tenfold has been lightly raced in his career finishing fifth in the Arkansas Derby. No one, including this horse, knows how good this horse can really be. This could be Tenfold’s coming out or retirement party.
  8. Diamond King (+2000, -6000) – Diamond King has four wins in six career starts. You might remember his win the Federico Tesio at Laurel Park, but the Preakness is another beast.
Picks To Beat Justify At The Preakness

Top Picks To Beat Justify At The Preakness

Justify is listed at -225 odds to win the Preakness Stakes on May 19th. That’s an expensive way to win $100. Or you can bet AGAINST Justify winning the Preakness at +175.

Odds To Win & Lose the 2018 Preakness Stakes

(win, lose)

  • Justify (-225, +175)
  • Good Magic (+350, -530)

  • Diamond King (+2000, -6000)
  • Bravazo, Sporting Chance, Tenfold, Lone Sailor (+2500, -7500)

Picks To Beat Justify At The Preakness

The betting favorite to beat Justify is Kentucky Derby second place finisher Good Magic at +350. Is Good Magic worth your betting bucks to beat Justify? Or is there another dark horse to bet on to win the 2018 Preakness Stakes?

Betting Favorite to Beat Justify At The Preakness: Good Magic +350

Good Magic ran a great race when finishing second to Justify in the May 5 Kentucky Derby. His run was so encouraging that trainer Chad Brown wants to give it another shot to go after the Bob Baffert trained monster.

Does Good Magic have any chance of upsetting Justify? He does because his sire, Curlin, won the 2007 Preakness Stakes after finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. A shorter Preakness means that Good Magic could stick closer to Justify before the real running starts.

Still, it’s difficult to take low odds on a horse that just got pummeled by the Derby winner two weeks before. I’m looking elsewhere.

Smart Pick to Beat Justify At The Preakness: Quip +1600

Quip’s trainer skipped the Derby because he wants a fresh horse heading into the Preakness Stakes. Quip was all out to hold onto second to Magnum Moon in the Arkansas Derby. Like Good Magic, he should be more attentive to the pace in the Preakness Stakes.

Quip might even take the lead if Justify prefers to track the pace setters. Quip will need some luck to beat Justify. Every horse in the race will. I’d rather ride luck at 25 to 1 than at 4.5 to 1. That means Quip is the smart pick to beat Justify.

Longshot Pick to Beat Justify At The Preakness: Sporting Chance +2500

In a short field of eight, Sporting Chance has the best chance to upset the 2018 Preakness Stakes favorite, Justify.

He was a nice-looking horse as a two-year-old. He has tactical speed. He won the Hopeful at Saratoga and I am betting he can make a deep run in the Preakness. This is the horse you want to bet on if you want the most bang for your buck!

Chasing Justify at Pimlico and on the 5Dimes fixed odds horse betting board is Derby runner-up Good Magic. He is the second favorite at +350. Will Justify follow up his Kentucky Derby win with a Preakness victory? Or will another top-tier betting Preakness pick spoil a 2018 Triple Crown bid? Maybe some where on the Preakness fixed odds betting board lays a dark horse. A long shot that surprises the world to win the Preakness.

2018 Kentucky Derby Trainer Power Rankings

2018 Kentucky Derby Trainer Power Rankings

The 2018 Kentucky Derby is here and if you are getting ready to pick a winner keep in mind that trainers can impact a winner like Bill Belichick or whoever coaches the Browns. With that in mind, I have ranked trainer/horse duos for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

2018 Kentucky Derby Trainer Power Rankings

  1. Aidan O’Brien, Mendelssohn +525 – O’Brien might be the best trainer in the world. If you ask anyone outside of North America who’s the best in the world, they’ll tell you it’s Aidan O’Brien. He’s got a freak of a racehorse that should win the Kentucky Derby. Notice that I wrote should?
  2. Bob Baffert, Justify +365, Solomini +2350 – Ever since Cavonnier finished second to Grindstone in the 1996 Kentucky Derby, Bob Baffert has been a Run for the Roses force. He won the Derby with Silver Charm, Real Quiet, War Emblem, and, of course, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
  3. Todd Pletcher, Vino Rosso +1350, Audible +600, Noble Indy +3000, Magnum Moon +750 – Todd Pletcher took home his second Derby win last year when Always Dreaming won the Run for the Roses. He’s got a strong hand heading into Saturday’s race.
  4. Chad Brown, Good Magic +825 – Brown has been one of the best trainers, some say the best, in the United States the past 3 years. He won the Preakness last year with Cloud Computing. Good Magic could be sitting on a big race.
  5. Mick Ruis, Bolt d’Oro +850 – Ruis was an owner. Then, he became a trainer. If he had more experience with 3-year-olds, he might be at the top of the list. That’s how much respect Bolt d’Oro deserves.
  6. Mark Casse, Flameaway +4500 – Mark Casse had a real shot to win the Kentucky Derby last year with Classic Empire. Flameaway isn’t as good as Classic Empire. Still, the fact that Casse has gotten him to win 2 races, and finish second in his other 3 races this year tells you what a great trainer he is.
  7. Jerry Hollendorfer, Instilled Regard +6000 – Hollendorfer campaigned Songbird. He also campaigned Shared Belief.
  8. Bill Mott, Hofburg +1500 – Cigar’s trainer has an outside derby contender in Hofburg. If any trainer can get a 3-year-old to run lights out in the Kentucky Derby in only his fourth-lifetime race, it’s Bill Mott.
  9. Kiaran McLaughlin, Enticed +2500 – Enticed just doesn’t seem to have what it takes to win on Saturday. Still, McLaughlin knows how to get them ready. I’m not totally discounting.
  10. Keith J. Desormeaux, My Boy Jack +2000 – Desormeaux, jockey Kent Desormeaux’s brother, has started to show up in the Kentucky Derby.  He had a legit contender, Exaggerator, a couple of years ago.
  11. Steve Asmussen, Combatant +7000 – Steve Asmussen trained two of the best horses to step on a racetrack in the past 20 years, Curlin and Rachel Alexandra.
  12. Tom Amoss, Lone Sailor +5000 – Amoss has a decent closer who could get a fast pace to chase in Lone Sailor. If the favorites fall apart, he’ll have as good of a shot as anybody.
  13. Jason Servis, Firenze Fire +10000 – Servis won the 2004 Kentucky Derby with Smarty Jones. Firenze Fire is not Smarty Jones.
  14. Dale Romans, Promises Fulfilled +5000, Free Drop Billy +3500 – I know that both Promises Fulfilled and Free Drop Billy did enough to make it to the Kentucky Derby starting gate. Neither has a shot, though.
  15. D. Wayne Lukas, Bravazo +6000 – D. Wayne’s got a horse in this year’s Derby. I don’t expect much, but the man that owned the Kentucky Derby in the 1980’s can pull rabbits out of his hat. He’d have to pull around 100 unicorns out of his hat for Bravazo to win on Saturday.

2018 Kentucky Derby Odds & Betting Tiers

The 2018 Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday on May 5th with the main event posting at approx 6:34 PM ET. While the ML Kentucky Derby track odds have Justify as the at 3/1, he’s got some close company at the top of the fixed odds horse racing betting board.

The 5Dimes’ 2018 Kentucky Derby Favorites

  • Justify +330
  • Mendelssohn +450 (pictured)

From the chosen 2018 Kentucky Derby betting favorites by 5Dimes oddsmakers, Mendelssohn is the play for purely economic reasons. Mendelssohn at +450 pays out more than Justify at +330. The last five Kentucky Derby’s were won by the favorite. And one of these top two horses may very well decide the fate of who will win the first jewel of the 2018 Triple Crown.

The 2nd Tier 2018 Kentucky Derby Favorites

  • Magnum Moon +600
  • Audible +625
  • Bolt d’Oro +700
  • Good Magic +900

Of the four second tier Kentucky Derby betting favorites, Bolt d’Oro offers the best odds comparable to the horse’s actual chance of winning. He was a 3 to 1 choice to win the Kentucky Derby during the winter. Bolt d’Oro had no shot to win the Santa Anita Derby. Not after Justify got away with a super easy lead.

The 2018 Kentucky Derby Middle Of The Pack Picks

  • Vino Rosso +1400
  • My Boy Jack +1500

Out of the middle of the pack of Kentucky Derby betting options, I’m partial to Vino Rosso pulling off the upset at +1400 over My Boy Jack pulling off the upset at +1500. The reason I like Vino Rosso is that I believe he’s got a ton of upside. The Wood Memorial win was fantastic. That came off a disappointing run in the Tampa Bay Derby. If Vino Rosso can move forward, he could upset Bolt d’Oro, Justify, and Mendelssohn for the win.

That’s not to write that My Boy Jack is without any shot at all. My Boy Jack won the Lexington. He goes into the Derby with hot hoofs. He also always puts forth a good effort.

So You Want To Bet On A 2018 Kentucky Derby Long Shot

  • Hofburg +2000
  • Solomini +2200
  • Enticed +2300
  • Noble Indy +2500
  • Flameaway +3000
  • Free Drop Billy +3500
  • Lone Sailor +4500
  • Promises Fulfilled +5000
  • Bravazo +5000
  • Firenze Fire +5500
  • Combatant +6000

You are still reading, because you want a big Kentucky Derby betting payday by finding a long shot to win the 144th running of the roses. The long shots that I am betting on to win the 2018 Kentucky Derby are: Hofburg, Noble Indy, and Flameaway. Keep reading if you want to know why you too should put down a couple of bucks on my Derby long shot picks

Hofburg is trained by Bill Mott, the man who trained Cigar. His sire is Tapit. On his dam’s side is Touch Gold. Touch Gold won the 1997 Belmont Stakes. Hofburg broke his maiden.  Then, he finished second to Audible in the Florida Derby. He’s got a lot of upside.

Noble Indy won the Louisiana Derby. He didn’t just win the race. He won the race after being a part of a ridiculously fast pace. Flameaway did all the running in the Bluegrass Stakes, the Derby prep won by

Good Magic. With some luck, who knows?

2018 Kentucky Derby

The 2018 Kentucky Derby will run this Saturday, May 5th. After winning the Santa Anita Derby, Justify, a 3-year-old trained by Triple Crown master Bob Baffert, opened as the 3/1 morning line favorite. Justify no doubt deserves to be the favorite. Are Justify’s odds justified, though? Always Dreaming won the Derby at 9/2 odds last year. Can Justify live up to his favorite billing?

2018 Kentucky Derby Betting Cheat Sheet

2018 Kentucky Derby Betting Cheat Sheet

The Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, May 5. While all eyes will be on Race 12, I am giving you my a closer look at a how to bet seven Churchill Downs races on Kentuky Derby day including the main event.

2018 Kentucky Derby Betting Cheat Sheet

What: 2018 Kentucky Derby
When: Saturday, May 5th, 2018
Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
Post Time: 6:34 PM ET
TV Coverage: 2:30-7:20 PM ET
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live

Race 6 – Grade 1 Humana Distaff

The chalk, Lewis Bay, finished third by a head in the Humana Distaff in his last. Finley’sluckycharm, who’s also one of the chalks, beat Lewis Bay. American Gal is the other 7/2 choice. Why not go against all of them? I think California invader Skye Diamonds has a huge shot at 5/1.

Race 7 – Grade 1 Distaff Turf Mile Stakes

This is about as wide-open as any race on Saturday’s Churchill Downs’ card. That includes being as wide-open as the Kentucky Derby. In a wide-open race, it makes sense to back a horse offering great odds that fits the profile of the race. That’s Res Ipsa. She’s 10/1 on the morning line. Great turf rider Julien Leparoux takes the call. She’s also 2-1-2 from 9 races going a mile on the turf. Finally, she has 2 wins from 4 starts over Churchill’s turf track.

Race 8 – Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes

It’s going to be hard to beat the 9/5 morning line chalk, Imperial Hint. I’m going to try and do it, though. Limousine Liberal is 4/1 on the morning line. He’s a 7-furlong specialist with a 3-2-1 record from 8 starts. He’s also 5 wins from 7 starts over the Churchill Downs’ dirt.

Race 9 – Grade 2 American Turf Stakes

Rushing Fall should go off much lower than his 5/1 morning line odds because he’s trained by Chad Brown and is undefeated. I like the Aidan O’Brien trained Threeandfourpence. Jockey Ryan Moore and O’Brien could start a possibly massive day when Threeandfourpence takes the American Turf Stakes on May 5.

Race 10 – Grade 3 Pat Day Mile

If Mask goes off at 4/1, he’ll be the biggest overlay on the Derby Card. That’s how much better he is than his competition in the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile. Trained by Chad Brown, Mask was a 20/1 shot to win the Derby after his second-lifetime race. He’s that well-regarded.

Race 11 – Grade 1 Old Forrester Turf Classic

Tough to go chalky in any race on Derby Day, but it’s tough to look past the Chad Brown-trained Beach Patrol. Beach Patrol should take the lead, or run right off, and hold off the closers. Deauville, trained by Aidan O’Brien, has a good shot.

Race 12 – Grade 1 Kentucky Derby

The big race is a no-brainer to me. Mendelssohn is much better than his competition. That means he should win going away. However, I predict his odds land around 3/1. That makes him a play against with my win money. Who do I think upsets Mendelssohn? Why not Audible? Todd Pletcher trains and the Florida Derby winner has gone on to win the Kentucky Derby two years running.
