How did both teams get to the National Championship game? The second-ranked Clemson Tigers steamrolled third-ranked Notre Dame 30-3 in the Cotton Bowl. On the same night, No. 1 Alabama outlasted fourth-ranked Oklahoma 45-34 in the Orange Bowl.
Clemson and Alabama are both undefeated so far, and both are 8-5 against the spread. If the National Championship betting spread holds, the Tigers will be an underdog for just the 5th time in the last three seasons. The Tide have been favored in their previous 53 consecutive games.
The lookahead betting line on a potential title game between Alabama and Clemson opened the Crimson Tide as 9-point favorites.
This is the fourth straight season in which the Crimson Tide and Tigers will meet in the playoff. Alabama beat Clemson 24-6 in a semifinal last season. In 2016 and 2017 the teams split their two title meetings.
If Alabama wins, coach Nick Saban will win his seventh national championship, an NCAA record. Moreover, the Tide can be the first team to win the title in consecutive seasons since Alabama won the title in 2011 and 2012.
