Heisman Trophy Odds Trevor vs. Tua

The 2019 Heisman Trophy is looking like a two-horse race between emerging star Trevor Lawrence +235 and 2020’s projected first pick overall Tua Tagovailoa +215. The next closest, based on the betting odds, is former Alabama starter and current Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts +1000. He is followed by Jake Fromm +1200, Justin Fields +1250 and Adrian Martinez +1300, also all quarterbacks. The only non-QB player in the top ten is Wisconsin rusher Jonathan Taylor +2000.

Heisman Trophy Betting Trends

Both of the last two Heisman winners, Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, crossed the 4,000-yard passing mark in their winning seasons. Oregon’s Marcus Mariota threw for 4,454 yards in 2014 the year he won. Is that the benchmark for Heisman voters? Not so fast. Louisville’s Lamar Jackson passed for 3,543 yards when he won in 2016. His 1,571 rushing yards and 21 rushing yards was undeniable to voters. Last season’s passing leader, Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, was passed over in favor of Murray for the Heisman even though Haskins passed for 4,831 yards versus Murray’s 4361. However, Murray did rush for 1001-yards. Passing yard totals include post-season games after the Heisman Trophy has been awarded.

The only non-quarterback to win the Heisman this decade was rusher Derrick Henry in 2015 making the aforementioned Taylor a long shot.
