Opening Odds For & Against Winning the College Football National Championship

LSU Tigers +115 / -135

The Louisiana State Tigers beat #4 Georgia 37-10 in the SEC Championship. That catapulted LSU ahead of Ohio State. The Tigers battle Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff Semifinals.

LSU is a -13 favorite to beat Oklahoma. That means most feel the Tigers should make it to the National Championship. Making it to the title game is the first step. Do the odds justify a wager on LSU to win it all?

No defense has stopped quarterback Joe Burrow. The soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winner completes 77.9% of his passes. He doesn’t miss. Unless you can make Burrow miss, you won’t outscore LSU. What’s scary is how the Tigers handled Florida, Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia in the SEC. The defense has stepped it up in the last couple of games. So, yes, LSU is worth backing at +115.

Clemson +255 / -310

It’s more difficult to gauge Clemson’s chances. Unlike LSU, Clemson plays in a soft conference. No team in the ACC stood a shot against the defending National Champions. Clemson dominated Virginia in the conference championship. But, the Cavaliers lost to Louisville, Notre Dame, and Miami this season.

Only Notre Dame is elite among those 3. The best out-of-conference team Clemson beat was Texas A&M. Clemson must get past Ohio State in the CFP Semis. Go -310 to lose instead of +255 to win on Dabo Sweeney’s squad.

Ohio State +315 / -380

Ohio State battled Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship a week after demolishing their biggest rivals. 7 days before, the Buckeyes beat Michigan 56-27. They were due for a letdown game after pummeling the Wolverines. The point? Ohio State managed to beat Wisconsin 34-21. That’s 3 ½ points off the spread.

They get 21 days to prepare for Clemson. The Buckeyes remain the only team DE Chase Young plays for. Chase Young will terrorize Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The +315 odds are a gift.

Oklahoma +1050 / -1600

Oklahoma snuck into the College Football Playoff. They got lucky to beat Baylor in the Big 12 Championship. Utah laid an egg against Oregon. If those 2 things hadn’t happened, Oklahoma wouldn’t be here.

Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. He’s not good enough to go tit-for-tat with Joe Burrow. If a miracle happens and Oklahoma beats LSU, they won’t beat Clemson or Ohio State. Take a flyer if you feel lucky. If you don’t, pass on both sides of this wager.
