Don’t blink, but the 2017 NCAA Basketball season tips off this Friday, Nov 10th. It couldn’t start sooner after an off-season of FBI investigation surrounding corruption controversy. It’s not where anyone associated with the sport wants to be, but it’s where we are.
The offseason wasn’t all bad news. The bevy of impromptu exhibition games staged by many schools to raise funds for hurricane relief is what sports is all about.
The headliner was Kansas vs. Missouri, a low-budget PPV remake of the Border War rivalry dubbed the “Showdown for Relief”, generating a whopping $1.75 million. $339,000 was raised by a Michigan State versus Georgia tilt. Baylor and Houston tallied $20,000. Tens of thousands more were raised by Villanova versus Drexel, LSU facing Tulane, UConn hosting Providence, Nebraska visiting Mississippi State, and on and on.
